Announcing a new academic study abroad music program through Florida Atlantic University® from May 27 – June 24, 2023. Limited student spots are available for the inaugural year of “FAU Opera in Italy,” a four-week course in La Spezia, Italy.
In partnership with the Conservatorio Giacomo Puccini - La Spezia, the “FAU Opera in Italy” program offers an Italian experience that provides the following course credit through Florida Atlantic University: Opera Workshop (MUO 1501, 4503, 6505), or Music Appreciation (MUL 2010 – 3 credits).
The program is perfect for vocal performance students or non-music majors seeking general education/elective course credit while studying abroad. In addition, non-FAU students who are Florida residents can qualify for FAU’s advertised in-state tuition.
Voice students in Opera Workshop will train with scholars from the USA and Italy, sing in multiple concerts throughout the city/region, and attend classes in the historic Giacomo Puccini Conservatory. The conservatory will still be in session, so this program offers a unique opportunity to train simultaneously with Italian students.
For students seeking general education/elective credits in Music Appreciation and Music in Global Society, your experience will include daily classes and multiple cultural events in La Spezia, Florence, and Verona.
Situated in the Liguria region on the western point of the Italian Riviera, La Spezia is a charming harbor town with just under 100,000 residents resting about halfway between Genoa and Pisa. La Spezia is large enough to experience diverse cuisine, shopping, and attractions, yet small enough to explore by foot or bicycle. The city is notable for its museums, port, and proximity to the beautiful Cinque Terre Italy coastline.
The program includes housing, transportation from the train station to your accommodations, daily classes, concerts, a day trip to Florence, and travel and a ticket to see Verdi’s Aïda at the Arena di Verona.
The Opera Workshop course, under the direction of Dr. Mitchell Hutchings, provides an ideal opportunity for less experienced singers to establish the basics of their craft. The program offers Italian song literature, operatic literature, and staged scenes selected according to the individual needs and abilities of the student.
Public performance opportunities include concerts of operatic and/or song literature. The highest standards are sought in a nurturing and supportive environment, allowing Opera Workshop participants to leave La Spezia with new skills and elevated poise and confidence.
